In front of ECCO head quarters in TØnder, Denmark there is a statue of a giant foot that's impossible to miss. The reason for it being a foot instead of a shoe is quite simple, the foot is the starting point for everything we create. To better understand everything there is to know about the human foot we rely on the never-ending scientific work of people like Dr. professor Brüggemann at the Institute für Biomechanik.

There, Dr. professor Brüggemann measures and monitors the movement of thousands of feet and uses this data to precisely identify every single size and the exact last specifications that go into every singe pair of ECCO shoes. The ECCO philosophy is a simple one: Our shoes must follow the foot. Design is built into every ECCO shoe. To be Danish is to be part of a design heritage where form, function and simplicity have the final say. In everything we design there has to be a purpose, a contributing factor that must add to the whole of the shoe.

Nothing we design is done just for the sake of doing it. This isn't to say all ECCO shoes resemble Danish design, but the principle that form has to follow function is there, every step of the way. Perhaps this is why ECCO has been exhibited at the Danish Design Center as an innovator in Scandinavian Design.
